No one is entitled to special rights

Posted on August 13, 2010 in Devil's Advocate | Comments: zero

I do not believe in using laws to grant any particular group of people “special rights.” I don’t care who they are. I am totally with the argument now that marriage is a special legal right, so I think it is imperative that we act immediately.

I propose that as of 8:00 am Central Time on Monday, all marriages in the United States that were legally solidified should be dissolved. Don’t worry, straight people, you can petition for your special right again, but it can not be through legal channels. You must satisfy these requirements:

1. Your marriage can only be valid within your particular church, in your town, in your state. If you have no church, you can not be together anymore. Sorry. Marriage is strictly a religious thing, right? I know that means you’ll miss out on any tax benefits, and you won’t have much in the way of inheritance and other such insignificant things, but you can live without those.  Who says you’re entitled to any part of your loved one’s estate anyway, you were only together 45 years.

My new disease diagnosis

Posted on August 12, 2010 in Devil's Advocate, Rants | Comments: zero

I have officially been diagnosed with Generalized Antipathy Disorder, and there’s no cure.  Luckily there’s a pill I can take that my psychiatrist says will reverse all the symptoms.  Unfortunately, the side effects it lists are nervousness, nausea, dry mouth, sore throat, drowsiness, weakness, uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body, loss of appetite, weight loss, changes in sex drive or ability, excessive sweating, rash, hives, fever, joint pain, swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs, difficulty breathing or swallowing, fever, sweating, confusion, fast or irregular heartbeat, and severe muscle stiffness, seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist (hallucinating) and seizures.

That sounds pretty bad but I guess it’s a small price to pay to not have GAD anymore.

The ultimate fix for the United States health care problem

Posted on August 19, 2009 in Devil's Advocate | Comments: zero

One of the most important facts concerning the current health care debate is also one of the least discussed.  We hear about the World Health Organization’s 2000 report listing the United States as number 37 in health care, behind  the United Kingdom, France and Canada.  We hear about criticism of a public option and fights between politicians.  The most important fact has nothing to do with those things, and that fact is:

The opinion about quality of health care in the United States differs depending on how one experiences the system.

I’ll get to why that’s important in a minute but for now a quick explanation by use of examples.  One, a person who has never had a serious illness is much more likely to be happy with the current system because they haven’t really had to use it.  Two, some people get sick and are taken care of by their insurance companies just fine.  Three, some people get sick and are dumped by their insurance companies.  Some people never use their insurance, some go bankrupt because their insurance wouldn’t cover a serious illness.

Destroying government acceptance of illegal immigration

Posted on July 30, 2009 in Devil's Advocate | Comments: zero

Today I had a very interesting conversation about immigration with a man who lives nearby. He told me everything he knew about the scourge of illegal immigration and made some very personal points with great intensity. He was very convincing. So I did a little research, and I discovered a government-supported statement that supports immigration in such a widespread way that I believe we must take it upon ourselves to remove it from our lexicon. It’s in public and our children see it on a regular basis. If we’re going to be consistent, this statement must go.

In essence, the statement says that the United States is proud to take in just about anybody at any time, and will light the path for them to come. We simply can’t approve of something like that, so here’s my plan.
